Smoke Flares

Smoke Flares, Torch Flares & Smoke Grenades — UK Legal Coloured Smoke
At Fireworks Shop, we've been selling pyrotechnics for over 20 years, and smoke flares remain one of the most asked-about products we stock. It's easy to see why. A smoke flare produces a thick, vivid column of coloured smoke that photographs and films unlike anything else — and because they produce smoke rather than sparks or bangs, they're usable at events and in locations where traditional fireworks simply aren't appropriate. They are the daytime fireworks alternative.
What Are Smoke Flares?
Smoke flares — also known as smoke grenades or smoke bombs — are pyrotechnic devices that release a sustained cloud of dense coloured smoke when activated, typically by pulling a wire or ring. They produce no explosion, no loud bang, and no sparks. Most burn for between 60 and 90 seconds, giving you enough time to capture the moment properly. All products in our range are Category F1 or F2 consumer fireworks, meaning they are fully legal to purchase and use in the UK for anyone aged 18 or over, with no licence required.
Handheld Smoke Flares
Our handheld smoke flares are the most popular product in this category. Available in blue, red, green, purple, and white, they produce a thick, dense plume of vivid coloured smoke from the moment you pull the ring. These are the go-to choice for gender reveals — blue for a boy, pink or red for a girl — couple shoots, engagement photos, festival content creation, and wedding celebrations. The 250mm size gives a strong, sustained output that fills the frame brilliantly. If you're planning a gender reveal, browse our dedicated Gender Reveal fireworks page for our full pink and blue range including barrages and bundles.
Torch Flares
For something with real theatrical intensity, our Blue and Red Torch Flares — available in packs of 5 — produce a focused, brilliant column of coloured flame and dense smoke. Torch flares are ideal for lining a driveway, creating a dramatic backdrop for an outdoor party or display, or adding atmosphere to events held on private land. Sold in packs of five, they're excellent value and simple to use.
Black Cat Smoke Grenades
The Black Cat smoke grenade range is compact, affordable, and consistently reliable. Available in green, red, purple, and white, each grenade delivers approximately 60 seconds of concentrated coloured smoke with ring-pull activation. Black Cat is one of the most recognisable names in UK consumer fireworks, and their smoke grenades are a firm favourite with airsoft and paintball players, photographers looking for a cost-effective option, and anyone who wants a vivid colour burst without the larger handheld format.
Smoke Flares for Football & Sports Celebrations
Coloured smoke flares are hugely popular with football supporters for private garden celebrations — promotion parties, cup final nights, and grassroots club events on private land. Show your team colours with a vivid smoke display that looks incredible on video. One important note: under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, it is a criminal offence to possess or use smoke flares, smoke bombs, or any pyrotechnic device at or near a designated sports ground — including while entering or attempting to enter. This applies even to unlit devices. Our smoke flares are sold for use on private land only, away from any sports ground or public place.
Safe Use of Smoke Flares
Smoke flares must only be used on private land, with the landowner's permission. It is illegal to use fireworks or pyrotechnics in a public place under the Fireworks Regulations 2004 — this includes roads, parks, and any publicly accessible area. Always use smoke flares outdoors in an open area, maintaining a minimum 8 metre safety distance from buildings, away from dry vegetation, vehicles, and crowds. Never use indoors. Read the manufacturer's instructions fully before use. For full guidance visit our Firework Safety advice page.

What is the safest way to use a smoke flare?
-
Always use them outdoors on private land in an open area. Maintain at least 8 metres distance from any building. Keep well away from dry vegetation, vehicles, and crowds. Never use indoors under any circumstances. Read the manufacturer's instructions fully before use. Once you pull the ring the device will burn to completion and cannot be extinguished, so make sure everyone nearby is aware before you activate it.

What colours of smoke flares do you sell?
-
Across our range we stock blue, red, green, purple, white, and pink. Not every colour is available in every format — the handheld flares come in blue, red, green, purple, and white, while the Black Cat grenades are available in green, red, purple, and white. For gender reveals the most popular combination is blue for a boy and pink for a girl.

What is the difference between a smoke flare, a smoke grenade, and a smoke bomb?
-
They're essentially the same thing — different names for the same type of product. In the UK you'll hear all three terms used interchangeably. Smoke grenade tends to refer to the smaller canister format like our Black Cat range. Smoke flare usually refers to the larger handheld format. Smoke bomb is the more casual everyday term. All three produce coloured smoke, all three work by pulling a ring or wire, and all three are subject to the same legal rules.

What are smoke flares used for?
-
In my experience the most popular uses are gender reveals, outdoor photography and video shoots, wedding send-offs, and garden celebrations on private land. They're also really popular with airsoft and paintball players and content creators who want a vivid visual effect for Instagram and YouTube. The big advantage over standard fireworks is that they work brilliantly in daylight — you don't need to wait until dark to get a great result.

What is a smoke flare and how does it work?
-
A smoke flare is a pyrotechnic device that releases a thick, sustained cloud of coloured smoke when you pull the ring or wire. There's no explosion, no loud bang, and no sparks — just vivid colour smoke lasting between 60 and 90 seconds depending on the product. Once activated they can't be stopped, so make sure you're in position before you pull that ring.
