Mines & Dumps

Mines & Dump Cakes — Instant Impact Fireworks
Mines and dump cakes are two of the most exciting firework formats available in UK retail today — both designed to deliver maximum impact in the shortest possible time. Whether you're opening a display with a bang, punctuating between barrages, or finishing on something unexpected, nothing quite matches the instant drama these products deliver.
What is a Mine?
A mine is a cylindrical single-tube device that fires one charge from the ground up into the air, bursting into a single dramatic effect at height. Despite being a one-shot device, the effects on offer are impressive — products in this category deliver strobe, glittering, chrysanthemum or crackle finishes, each mine producing its own distinct effect. Mines were once a common sight in UK retail fireworks but became increasingly rare through the 1990s, with very few surviving into the modern market. However, the spirit of the mine very much lives on — because it directly inspired the creation of the dump cake.
What is a Dump Cake?
A dump cake is a multi-tube cake barrage where each tube is linked by a fast fuse, meaning all tubes fire in near-instant rapid succession — giving you a dense, explosive burst of effects rather than a drawn-out sequence. Tube sizes typically range from 20mm to 30mm, delivering serious lift and colour in one overwhelming volley. Think of it as taking the instant impact of a mine and multiplying it across an entire cake.
Dump cakes come in several configurations. Straight-firing dump cakes send all tubes directly skyward in a tight, powerful column — as seen in the Dark Demolisher and Moving On Up. Fanned or Z-firing dump cakes spread the tubes across a wide arc, producing a broad screen of effects that fills the sky — as seen in Brexit, Ghost Rider and Take Cover. There is also a fountain formation variation — where the firework opens as a crackling fountain effect and just as you think it's finishing, the fast fuse ignites and the entire contents erupt skyward in one spectacular burst. The Blue Star Eruption by Hallmark is a perfect example of this style.
Celtic Fireworks — The Home of the Dump Cake
The dump cake concept was first introduced to UK retail fireworks by Celtic Fireworks back in 2017, beginning with their fanned dump cakes Brexit, Ghost Rider and Take Cover. Celtic then expanded the format into straight-firing dump cakes with Dark Demolisher, Miners Revenge and Miners Revenge 2. To this day, Celtic Fireworks remain the only UK retailer to feature dump cakes across their range — and their commitment to the format extends to noise levels too, with Moving On Up bringing the instant dump cake effect to quieter displays and noise-restricted events with just an 8 metre safety distance.

What is a fountain formation dump cake?
-
A fountain formation dump cake opens as a crackling fountain effect at ground level — just as you think it's finishing, the fast fuse ignites and the entire contents erupt skyward in one spectacular burst. It's a great surprise element in any display. Blue Star Eruption by Hallmark Fireworks is a perfect example of this style.

#730 Wayne Richardson asks
What firing patterns do dump cakes come in?
-
Dump cakes are available in straight-firing and fanned configurations. Straight-firing sends all tubes directly skyward in a tight column, while fanned or Z-firing spreads the effect across a wide arc. There is also a fountain formation variation which opens as a crackling fountain before erupting skyward in one final burst.

Are dump cakes suitable for small gardens?
-
It depends on the product. Some dump cakes such as Moving On Up by Celtic Fireworks have a safety distance of just 8 metres, making them suitable for smaller spaces. Others require 15 or 25 metres so always check the safety distance on the individual product before purchasing.

What is the difference between a mine and a dump cake?
-
A mine is a single cylindrical tube that fires one charge from the ground into the air, producing a single visual lift effect — such as strobe, glittering, chrysanthemum or crackle. A dump cake is a multi-tube cake barrage where all tubes are linked by a fast fuse, firing in near-instant rapid succession to produce a much bigger and denser burst of effects.
